Kalani Oceanside Retreat
Not Your Common Aloha Experience

Dee Farrell talks about Kalani Oceanside Retreat

Why visit Kalani Oceanside Retreat?

Kalani Oceanside Retreat has quietly operated on the Big Island alongside an active volcano for 30 years, and now more than the mountain is erupting.  You gotta go experience this Hawaiian treasure for yourself.

When did you first meet Richard, the founder of Kalani?

I remembered meeting the founder, Richard, at one of the early meetings of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association.  So on my recent visit to the Aloha State, I gave him a call to catch up on developments.

What  is there to do at Kalani?

The list of weekly activities and workshops on offer are astounding! Plenty of choice, from belly dancing to nude yoga and salsa, from the Dolphin Dance to nature walks.

Which room would you choose on your visit to Kalani?

I was ready to check into the Rainbow Room, naturally, for some creative writing time, but the Tree House nearest the massage room sounded just as tempting.  Kalani’s accommodation ranges from campground to guest cottages; take your pick.

Kalani Tree House

The Tree House - Separate spacious units, on two levels, nestled under the cool shade of a large Monkeypod Tree, enhanced by views of pasture and glimpses of sea through a coastal grove of native Kamani (mahogany) and coconut palms. King bed, private bath, fan, mini fridge, ocean and horse pasture vistas.

Hale - Lodge

Lodge Rooms (Hales) - The three split level lodges house several rooms on each floor with access to a shared kitchen for more informal, communal living.

Cottages

Cottages - Nestled among trees - offering privacy and a place to relax. Double bed and queen futon, private bath, mini fridge, jungle vista.

Campsites - for the budget minded with access to an outside bathroom and hot showers.

How is Kalani connected to the wider community?

Richard Koob and Kalani GBLT staff and board have presented diversity appreciation programs in Hawaii's schools and communities since 1975. They have also conducted and participated in fundraisers for Hawaii's HIV/AIDS organizations, and contributed to and participated in major events including the Gay Games, Gay Naturists International, California Men Enjoying Naturism, the Billy Club, Faerie Gatherings, Maenner Naturlich, gay pride parades, and more.

Do you have internet and phone access?

There is limited cell phone (mobile) reception - some AT&T customers may get a signal. The retreat has two phone lines available in the reception area and cafe, available from 8am to 10:30pm. You can also use your laptop - either ethernet or wireless connection - and best of all it is free. If you don't have a computer you can check your email for an hourly fee.

How do I get to Kalini?

Pick up is available from the airport. The retreat is 32kms (20 miles) from the nearest town. There is no public transport but there is a lot to natural attractions in the vicinity and the retreat has a number of adventures which can be booked or included in a package. Just ask the Rainbow Concierge for assistance.
