Mindil Beach Darwin_Edmund McCombs

Darwin has been chosen as the host city for the third Asia Pacific Outgames to be held in May 2014.  About 2000 athletes and artists are expected to participate, including international visitors and Australians wanting to see the remote Top End of their country.

Darwin – the gateway to Australia’s Top End and capital of the Northern Territory – enjoys a relaxed, tropical lifestyle and is an ideal base for visits to such spectacular World Heritage areas as Kakadu National Park and its namesake, Charles Darwin National Park. It is also the start/end of one of the great train rides in the world, The Ghan.

Exploring the compact CBD by day is best done on foot, or aboard a hop on tour bus. The city can also be circumnavigated on a bicycle following a path that meanders through the lush esplanade, plus provides great views over the harbour. At night you can immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of the pubs and clubs that dominate the nightlife hub on Mitchell Street, dine at Cullen Bay, or try your luck at the casino on Mindil Beach.

Once a pioneer outpost and small port, Darwin has grown into one of Australia’s most modern and multicultural cities. There are many kilometres of wide, unpolluted beaches, including the pictured Mindil Beach. The city also has extensive parks and gardens including the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, Casuarina Coastal Reserve, and the Jingili Water Gardens.

Far in the north of Australia lies the wild, little town of Darwin.  At first glance, you may not see it as a gay tourist stop but unlike the rest of the sparsely populated Outback, this charming refuge in the middle of the Top End comes full of surprises.

The Ghan

Renowned as one of the world’s greatest train journeys, this is the wilderness of the outback at its best – an ocean of red dirt desert, vibrant aboriginal settlements and vast expanses of unpopulated land.
