Melbourne is a fun place to visit for film, food, fashion and flower festivals, and now little ancient art, too.

Melbourne Museum is hosting a fascinating exhibition on the Aztec Empire, featuring stunning artefacts never before seen in Australia. The exhibit is on now through 10 August, and well worth a weekday visit or weekend escape.

AZTECS is an incredible story of war, religious devotion, economic and technological development – and ultimately, tragedy. Visitors will be fascinated by the rise and fall of the Aztecs, between the 14th and 16th centuries, including the spectacular growth of the city of Tenochtitlan – at one stage the world’s largest metropolis.

Aztecs is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really immerse yourself in a civilisation that developed almost in parallel with our own. The Aztecs thrived with a sophisticated economic and cultural ethic that rivaled some of the leading lights of Europe at the time.

Enter the temple to uncover the mysteries of the Aztec afterlife. See striking statues that tell a story of belief, devotion and human sacrifice. Over 200 cultural treasures and dramatic multimedia from Mexico’s major museums tell the fierce story of a civilisation that was based on fear and appeasement of the gods.
