Summer is for action-packed adventures. Winter is for self-drive scenic exploring. Either season, don’t miss out on life…Here’s how the Rainbow Rambler lived the solo adventure on a Winter Getaway where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet in WA.
Fresh misty mornings, cosy cabins with a log fireplace, sleeping and waking to pounding ocean waves. Winter travel is time to indulge in hearty red wines, spicy beer and winter meals at local cafes and pubs.
WA is overflowing with wild places and quiet places. You can easily spend a week in the southwest corner on the Indian Ocean, or if you have more time, you can see the Best of the Southwest along the Southern Ocean – including the Valley of the Giants (as a Karri Forest Explorer and Treetop Walk), the hidden beaches and coves (off the beaten path, pristine and empty), and the Cape to Cape Track (caves, endangered plants and animals and coastal views).
The Cape to Cape Trail in Margaret River is a spectacular 5-10 day walk, but good for day trips and overnight camping (if you rug up in winter).
The famous Bibbulumn Track hugs the extraordinary coastline from Perth to Albany. Explore Australia just named this among the Top 5 Adventure Walks. It is the longest in the country at more than 1000 kms!
The competition is tough, but the best beaches and bays include Elephant Rock and Conspicuous Cliff near Walpole. The beaches and islands of Esperance are reportedly as good as it gets, but that’s a very long drive…another 600 kms/7 hours from Walpole).
Visit Southwest WA – Stay…just a little bit longer for the Best of the Southwest
Events – Whale Song Augusta 2-4 June Watching the Southern Right & Humpback Whales (June-Sep with calving in August)
Wildflowers – Suggested itineraries. Western Australia’s landscape bursts with colour from July to November, when native wildflowers bloom across the State. Floral extravaganzas can be seen in all regions at different times throughout the season.
Waves -the top surfing destination is Margaret River
Wines - Secret Southern Wineries
